Channel 4 television has decided to run a new two-part series called “Make Bradford British”. The first instalment, which was aired last Thursday, started off promisingly enough as random citizens from the northern English city of Bradford were made to sit a British citizenship test.
Eight of the few hundred participants, most of whom failed the test, were then selected to spend some time in a house together, ostensibly to get to know each other better and learn about the different types of people living in the city.
It was at this stage that the programme began it’s slow but steady descent into stereotypical farce. It seems the programme’s editors were more interested in appealing to the type of people that watch programmes like “Big Brother” or “I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here”, rather then those who are genuinely interested in contemporary social and cultural trends.
