Turkey’s gender gap widens, ranks 125 among 142 countries

For 2014, 142 countries were ranked according to an index that measured national gender gaps on economic, political, education and health-based criteria.

The objective of the project is to find whether women are presented with equal opportunities as men, regardless of whether they are in rich countries or poor ones. In the first report, produced in 2006, Turkey ranked 105 out 115 countries surveyed.

Out of the 111 countries that have been measured since 2006, 105 have been making progress, but Turkey is one of the few that have fallen down the ranks.

Thirty percent of countries are losing gains they have made in education, and at 40 percent Turkey is one of them. Interestingly, in health Turkey scored 0.608 in 2013, with 0 representing inequality and 1 representing equality, which rose to 0.618 in 2014. [Today's Zaman] Read more
