Newtown, a Sydney suburb better known for its mural celebrating US civil-rights leader Martin Luther King, has a new piece of street art with what appears to be a very different message.
It is a large painting of a woman wearing a burqa. She is within a red circle with a slash through it. The mural on Station Street has provoked strong reactions from passers-by; some see it as anti-Muslim. Marrickville Council, acting on complaints, is investigating legal avenues to have it removed.
