Scaremongering about the threat of "Islamification" facing the east London borough of Tower Hamlets has been popular in the right-wing press since Andrew Gilligan's witch-hunting Channel 4 documentary Britain's Islamic Republic was broadcast last year.
Several papers this week have published articles on that theme.
In a Sunday Times article headlined "London Taliban tell women to cover up" (see below) Dipesh Gadher reported: "The extremists appear to have taken the law into their own hands in Tower Hamlets, east London, one of the poorest areas of Britain, where native white people are in a minority."
The article centres on the case of "an Asian shop assistant who claims to have received death threats for refusing to wear a veil even though she is not a practising Muslim". [Islamophobia Watch] Read more
