The rise of Islam and the future of secularism

To be a Turk is to be a Muslim. This is not just an observation but a generally accepted proverb. Secular Turks still call themselves Muslim, even though they do not attend the mosque regularly and do not uphold all of the pillars of Islam.

They participate in religious ceremonies such as circumcision and Ramadan’s month of fasting and partaking in special meals. This is partly because it is social solidarity.
