Muslim staff at Marks & Spencer can refuse to sell alcohol and pork

.... Asda said it would not deploy Muslims on tills who objected to handling alcohol, while Morrisons, which is based in Bradford where there is a large Muslim community, said it had widespread experience of dealing with the issue and would “respect and work around anyone’s wishes not to handle specific products for religious or cultural reasons”.

At M&S, Muslim staff who do not wish to handle alcohol or pork have been told they can politely request that customers choose another till at which to pay.

[A COMMENT] "At M&S, Muslim staff who do not wish to handle alcohol or pork have been told they can politely request that customers choose another till at which to pay." Maybe the Muslim staff involved should be politely asked to look for another job, preferably with a Muslim employer. This is simply unbelievable.

[ANOTHER COMMENT] If you are refused to be served by a cashier in M&S because you have alcohol or Pork just walk out and leave the trolly load of food for them to sort out they will soon get the message.

[AND ANOTHER] Here in Morocco, supermarket staff, almost all of whom are Muslims, sell alcohol and pork products. As they are packaged so they don't come into direct contact with the product, they have no problem handling them. They would never think of embarrassing a customer simply because they do not eat or drink the product being purchased. [The Telegraph] Read more
