Burqa ‘confronting’, says Abbott

Tony Abbott has joined One Nation’s Pauline Hanson in criticising the burqa.

While labelling the Queensland senator’s decision to wear the burqa into the Parliament last week a “stunt”, he said he understood her point.

“I think she was trying to make the point that it is a confronting form of attire, and it is a confronting form of attire,” Mr Abbott told The West Australian.

“Now, I am not saying it should be banned, but it is a confronting form of attire and I certainly would be disappointed if any Australian chose to wear it.

“It was obviously a stunt, (but) I understand the point she was trying to make.”

When asked if Senate president Stephen Parry should have prevented Senator Hanson from entering the chamber dressed in the burqa, Mr Abbott said it was a “matter for the Senate”. [The West Australian] Read more
