$100m donated to Islamic schools

Donors in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates are sending an estimated $100 million (£61m) annually to radical Islamic schools in Pakistan that back militancy, according to a leaked US diplomatic cable.

The donations, to schools in the province of Punjab, come from Islamic charities and missionary organisations and are made "ostensibly with the direct support" of the Saudi and Emirati governments, said the cable, which was written in November 2008 and published by Pakistan's Dawn newspaper.
