In his lengthy attempt to convince his readers of the essentially peaceful and benign intentions of Islam, Suleman Nagdi (Mailbox, May 12) makes an astonishing claim.
He says that: "Contrary to what has been perceived, Islam is in many respects an egalitarian religion in its approach to each individual, never more so than placing the highest of values on all human life."
The truth is that in all Islamic states (both today and historically) non-Muslims are treated as kuffar (in Arabic, a term of gross insult), punitively taxed, and often have their lives circumscribed cruelly in many other ways.
If that is an example of "an egalitarian religion", then the word "egalitarian" has changed its meaning. [Leicester Mercury] Read more
