A women’s rights activist in Pakistan has filed a lawsuit against a man who accused her of blasphemy, a charge that carries the death penalty.
Gulalai Ismail was accused by Hamza Khan, 23, the head of a youth parliament, of insulting Islam and defaming Pashtun culture. He also posted her picture on social media with accusations that she was promoting a “western agenda” to undermine the state.
That alone may have placed her life in danger, but blasphemy is one of the most serious crimes and parents have murdered their own children for merely being accused of it.
