In Islam, there's more than one way to be an 'atheist'

.... In my experience, when it comes to atheism in the Muslim world, there is a conspiracy of sorts, akin to the "don't ask don't tell" principle on homosexuality in the US military –if a Muslim has lapsed, and no longer believes in God, there is no censure of that as long as one does not proselytise.

[A COMMENT] It will happen just as it happened in Europe with education, changes in society and an Enlightenment. We still have our religious fanatics who would like to see a return of their supremacy but it's unlikely to happen.

In time many of the Muslims who came to Europe will change their beliefs with a more laid back version of Islam, where it's Friday Prayers that count and the rest of the week is just getting on with their lives.

[ANOTHER] ''Despite the death penalty for apostasy in Islamic law – a sentence only ever likely to be brought into play, where not politically or mischievously motivated, by public declarations of anti-theism..''

Imagine this translated into- Despite the death penalty for apostasy in Christian law – a sentence only ever likely to be brought into play, where not politically or mischievously motivated, by public declarations of anti-theism..

Would we be as interested in discussing the finer points and would we regard anti-theism as 'mischievous' You cannot bubble wrap and somehow explain away a law that explicitly condemns non believers to death. It is what it is. Barbaric and anti human. [Guardian Cif] Read more
